Whether you’re an aspiring architect or a professional already in practice, receiving an award for your work should be a career goal. A local one usually suffices and replaces all the hard work. However, apparently, there are architectural international award-giving bodies you should target.
Here are four of the top awards any architect would be delighted to receive.
4. UIA Gold Medal
The International Union of Architects (UIA) started recognizing top architects since 1961 and giving out gold medals in 1984 every three years. You read it right. It’s not a typo error; it’s UIA which means Union Internationale des Architectes. The UIA and architects across the globe are looking forward to its next conference in 2017, “Soul of City” to be held in Seoul, Korea.
3. Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture
In 1923, Americans started a non-profit organization to preserve the Monticello, which is United States’ third president Thomas Jefferson’s architectural masterpiece. The same foundation annually collaborates with the University of Virginia to give recognition to exceptional architects since 1966.
2. Royal Gold Medal
Each year, the Royal Institute of British Architects on behalf of the monarchy awards the Royal Gold Medal to outstanding individuals and groups who have made notable contributions to the field of architecture. While most people expect architects to receive the sought-after award, there were instances when engineers, writers, and other influential individuals who highlight important elements of the industry.
1. Pritzker Architecture Prize
Mr. and Mrs. Jay A Pritzker, on behalf of the Pritzker family and the Hyatt Foundation, started what the architecture world considers to be their version of Nobel Prize in 1979. They strive to honor a living architect whose talent, vision, and commitment create significant contributions to humanity and Nature.
While there are many other award-giving bodies on the planet, these four remain to be the most prestigious. Design your way to snatch one of these awards, architect!
